You may encounter many defeats,
but you must not be defeated.
In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats,
so you can know who you are,
what you can rise from,
how you can still come out of it.
~Maya Angelou

Adversity is like the period of the rain. . .
cold, comfortless, unfriendly to people and to animals;
yet from that season have their birth
the flower, the fruit, the date, the rose and the pomegranate.
~Walter Scott

The ultimate measure of a person
is not where he or she stands
in moments of comfort and convenience,
but where he or she stands
at times of challenge and controversy.
~Martin Luther King, Jr.

Positive thinking is not the destination; it is the journey.
An optimistic person will be constantly challenged--
by external circumstances as well as inner fears and doubts.
Always remember that these tests are like a ladder you must climb.
As you move past each rung, your optimism strengthens
and your confidence begins to flex newly found muscle
that you might never have developed otherwise.

Slept really well through the night
And woke up feelin' so fine with mornin' wood!
I knew it was going to be a good day!

I invite you to join me now in this short Metta Prayer
Radiating the energy of peace and love out to all living beings
Take a few deep breaths to clear your mind
And focus on the here and now
This present moment
Now
Breathe in
Filling your being with peace and love
As you begin each line, breathe out slowly
Breathing these thoughts into the world
Reading, thinking, and feeling the words with peace and love
Sending them from your heart
Giving the energy to yourself and to all living beings
Breathe in and repeat the process for each line
Peace and Love
and continue to build
The more Beautiful World
Our Hearts know is Possible

Love alone is the fountain
from which all virtues fall
as drops of sparkling water.
What do I mean by love?
It is such a word
that one cannot give one meaning.
All attributes like kindness, gentleness,
goodness, humbleness, mildness, fineness,
are names of one and the same thing.
Love therefore is that stream which when it rises,
falls in the form of a fountain,
and each stream coming down is a virtue.
All virtues taught by books or by a religious person
have no strength and life
because they have been learned;
a virtue that is learned has no power, no life.
The virtue that naturally springs
from the depth of the heart,
the virtue that rises from the love-spring
and then falls as many different attributes,
that virtue is real.
There is a Hindustani saying,
‘No matter how much wealth you have,
if you do not have the treasure of virtue, it is of no use’.
The true riches
is the ever increasing spring of love
from which all virtues come.

GROOVIN' Through the 70s
A Moment Frozen in Time by Music
A Pearl on my String of Pearls
Saturday, July 1978
I was a 19-year-old summer camp counselor
We were in between sessions
Which meant the camp was vacant of campers
The kids left Friday afternoon
And we were off duty until Sunday
Lucky for us, the camp was located near a large city
So a bunch of us guys headed out for some fun on the town

I was a 19-year-old summer camp counselor
We were in between sessions
Which meant the camp was vacant of campers
The kids left Friday afternoon
And we were off duty until Sunday
Lucky for us, the camp was located near a large city
So a bunch of us guys headed out for some fun on the town
Scarfing down a ton of Mama's Pizza
Draining many, many pitchers of Miller Lite
(Drinking age was 18 at the time)
Laughing, joking, "burning" each other (all in good fun)
And sharing our war stories of that week's campers
Slept in Saturday morning
Woke up. Walked down to the pool and jumped in
To wash off my hangover
Drove to Burger King for breakfast
And then went to wash clothes
at a local laundromat not far from camp
Where I read a chapter or two from The Hobbit
To the rhythm of washers and dryers
I returned back to my cabin
Wearing nothing but my cutoffs
(breezy commando style of course)

And white with green trimmed Adidas Stan Smith tennis shoes
(no socks - as was the custom of the day)
(no socks - as was the custom of the day)
I was in the middle of making up my bunk
When the drone of the cabin's attic fan
Was overpowered by a blaring car radio
As I tucked in the sheets
The song that was playing caught my attention
The saxophonist was belting out this delicious melody
I leaned over the bunk and looked out my cabin window
Another counselor's car, a beige colored Volkswagen Rabbit,
Was parked just outside with its doors wide open
Pumping out this great song for all to hear
I kept listening hoping the guy on the radio
Would announce the name and artist of the song
That song was
"Baker Street"by Gerry Rafferty
And here it is:

“When you are joyful, when you say yes to life
and have fun and project positivity all around you,
you become a sun in the center of every constellation,
and people want to be near you.”

“Songs and smells will bring you back
to a moment in time more than anything else.
It's amazing how much can be conjured
with a few notes of a song or a solitary whiff of a room.
A song you didn't even pay attention to at the time,
a place that you didn't even know had a particular smell.”

I couldn't find a quote to express what I am thinking
So I tried to write my own
So here it is:
I enjoy remembering the good moments of my life
I often look back at the times I was so happy
When I felt really good, felt so much joy, so much love
I consider these moments as my pearls
Which I continue to collect and add to my life's string of pearls
I allow myself to dive into those good moments
And allow the joy and love glow and grow within my heart
Like that time I made love with the love of my life in the pool
Those times I went skinny dipping in my favorite creek
That time I was hugged by a Friend I was able to help
That time I was almost caught jacking off in an outdoor shower ; )
Savoring moments that bring smiles to my lips and to my heart
And I remind myself
How fortunate I have been to have these moments - these pearls

and flow through me out into the world
I don't believe we should live in the past
But these good moments sure give me strength
To move forward into the future
I suggest that you find some time each week or each day
To meditate upon your personal string of pearls
Spending time with each pearl
Feel the positive energy rise within you
And send it flowing into the world.
