We could say that meditation doesn't have a reason or doesn't have a purpose. In this respect it's unlike almost all other things we do except perhaps making music and dancing. When we make music we don't do it in order to reach a certain point, such as the end of the composition. If that were the purpose of music then obviously the fastest players would be the best. Also, when we are dancing we are not aiming to arrive at a particular place on the floor as in a journey. When we dance, the journey itself is the point, as when we play music the playing itself is the point. And exactly the same thing is true in meditation. Meditation is the discovery that the point of life is always arrived at in the immediate moment.

"Illicit passion has been a compelling subject to poets for centuries, its archetypal myth being the legend of Tristan and Isolde. The story of that unhappy couple caught between magic-induced desire for each other and circumstances that bar their love — Isolde is betrothed to King Mark, whom Tristan is sworn to serve — received a number of poetic accounts during the Middle Ages. It also inspired one of the landmark operas of the 19th century, Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde.

Wagner’s Prelude sets a tone that will pervade the entire opera. The use of melodic sequences — brief phrases repeating at successively higher pitches — establishes a palpable feeling of erotic longing, while the composer’s consistent avoidance of conventional harmonic resolutions propels the music restlessly forward.

Central to Tristan und Isolde is the notion of insatiable love intimately linked with death, for the couple’s desire is so intense, so all-consuming, that it can be fulfilled only by casting off the restraints of the material world. In the opera’s final scene, Isolde cradles the body of the slain Tristan. Gazing at him, she launches into an aria that has long been known as Love Death, or the “Liebestod.” (11:44 minute mark) From its quiet beginning, Isolde’s meditation grows ever more ecstatic until at last, as Wagner explained, she is “transformed” from mere flesh and blood to a more ethereal creature who can join her lover in a realm beyond this one. As the opera ends, the lifeless bodies of Tristan and Isolde lie together on stage, while the music suggests their spirits soaring serenely as one. So fully textured is the scoring that the Liebestod is easily presented as an orchestral piece without singing, as Wagner himself did." (SOURCE)
