Being born and raised in the South (US), I grew up drinking iced tea, so sweet, it could have poured like molasses. When I began drinking hot tea, I continued adding lots of sugar. One of my first tea mentors asked me if I'd like some tea to go with my sugar. Years later, I decided I needed to acquire the taste of unsweetened tea, so I could fully experience all the beautiful subtle notes of the different teas. At first it was difficult. My first reaction to drinking unsweetened tea was a major bitter face. As I continued to experiment, I realized that I was prejudging my reaction to the taste of the tea. I expected bitter in my mind and immediately judged it bitter in my mouth. I didn't have an opened mind about it. So I let go of my prejudgement and just watched the taste experience without labeling it - without judging it. I just accepted what was. I was then able to distinguish some very beautiful subtle notes in the tastes. By keeping an open mind and accepting what was without labeling, I was able to enrich my experience with tea. The same is true in all aspects of life - keep an open mind - accept what is there - truly experience a thing before making judgements.

Nan-in, a Japanese master during the Meiji era (1868-1912), received a university professor who came to inquire about Zen.
Nan-in served tea. He poured his visitor's cup full, and then kept on pouring.
The professor watched the overflow until he could no longer restrain himself. "It is overfull. No more will go in!"
"Like this cup," Nan-in said, "you are full of your own opinions and speculations. How can I show you Zen unless you first empty your up?”

After observation and analysis, when it agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and gain of one and all, then accept it and live up to it.

On Friendship

Your friend is your needs answered.
He is your field which you sow
with love and reap with thanksgiving.
And he is your board and your fireside.
For you come to him with your hunger,
and you seek him for peace.
When your friend speaks his mind
