"One of my friend's identity is closely tied to his youthful, handsome appearance, which in naturally fading over time. Skyler is very upset about this because he always associated his worth and value with his good looks, even though he is also an accomplished doctor, a wonderful father, and a good friend.
We must be very mindful about what we hold of the highest value or base our self-worth on.
Another friend of mine (Veronica) spent ten years identifying as a wonderful wife, only to lose her sense of worth after a divorce because she somehow forgot about everything else she still is.
I am a lot of things and not one of them defines me. As I also age like everyone else and start losing the vertical that used to help me excel in volleyball, for example, and my kneecaps no longer support lateral movement on the tennis court, I am grateful for all the years I already had while I look forward to what doors are going to open now that I can't walk through old ones anymore.
This is why letting go is so liberating. We can look at our past jobs, relationships, youthful hair and skin, agility and even ability and think, "That was fun!" and let them go. Age gracefully, leave peacefully, and live happily. Not despite everything being impermanent, but because it is!
